Asus has decided to do something different from its rivals. At the IFA show in Berlin, Asus announced their first diminutive stick PC that they think would be distinct from the rest.
Called the ‘VivoStick’, this is Asus’ answer for Intel’s Compute Stick. It’s a PC that runs Windows 10, which can be carried in your pocket. Just to remind, the Compute Stick form factor is the x86 version of the popular ARM-based HDMI sticks. The first generation x86 Compute Stick came from Intel and used a Bay Trail-T SoC. In spite of looking like an oversized thumb drive, the unit was actively cooled.
Asus’s first foray into this form factor comes with the 14nm Cherry Trail Atom processor, which would give it an edge in terms of performance. It also has a good industrial design that’s quite stylish and attractive with a soft-touch finish unlike Intel’s Compute Stick. It is based on a quad-core Intel Atom processor.
Further, it comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a headphone jack. It also has comes with two USB 3.0 ports as compared to the competitors’ models that mostly come with a single USB 2.0 port. This means that you can connect a mouse and keyboard at launch, making the initial setup substantially easier.
According to TechRadar, the VivoStick is clocked at 1.44GHz (burtsable to 1.84GHz). Further, the VivoStick also comes with Windows 10 pre-installed, and Asus will be offering a mobile app that lets you control it from your tablet or smartphone. It measures 138mm x 34mm x 15mm and weighs 70 grams. It’s also a bit larger than other pcs-on-a-stick. The VivoStick is available in three color options: white/silver, matte black/gloss black, and blue/gold.
It is expected that the VivoStick may be priced at $129; however, Asus is providing no information as to exactly when the pocketable PC will go on sale.
